Within the production umbrella and its wide range of departments, there are quite a few skilled individuals you can hire when your budget allows. As you gain more and more experience in the artistic and commercial aspects of filmmaking, you'll clearly recognize the value of specialized technicians and contractors.

Get a Grip

Production members whose job it is primarily to set up and move equipment around a set are called grips. A busy group of individuals, these technicians work closely with the electrical technicians. The key grip is in charge of the crew that performs the muscle work, moving lighting gear, camera equipment, and virtually all of the other production equipment. A dolly grip operates the camera dolly, which is essentially a rolling platform that a camera is secured to. This includes moving and keeping level the tracks on which a camera is placed, otherwise known as a dolly track.
